CeLTIE Audio Library

CeLTIE has a very extensive collection of audio recordings in over 100 languages and other subjects. Currently assigned materials for language classes are available to IU Bloomington users on on our website at http://www.indiana.edu/~celtie/portal.html.

Listening to tapes or CDs.

You may listen to these recordings in our lab rooms, Ballantine Hall rooms 115 and 117, or in some cases make copies to take home with you. Those tapes whose publishers require that they be used only in the lab are clearly labelled. Please observe any publisher's restrictions on copying the tapes.

Many of the older tapes which are not currrently assigned are also available on cassette at the check-out desk in room 121. We are currently in the process of digitizing our collection, but some materials may require advance notice for you to listen to them. You can listen to those during our office hours of 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.

Purchasing tapes or CDs.

Recordings produced here at Indiana University are usually available for duplication on request. There is a charge for this service, based on the length and number of the tapes or CDs. Most are not kept in stock but have to be copied when ordered (which may take a while, depending on how busy we are). I have marked some of the ones I know people want with an "I" after the catalog number. Some of the tapes not marked may also be available, but we have less information about them, or the books are out of print or were never published. Please contact Lucinda Miller, lamiller@indiana.edu for more information. We cannot copy materials that were not produced here, unless we were asked to by their copyright holders. Some of our collection dates back 40 years, so we don't have ordering information for every tape. Many are simply not available.

If you're looking for tapes in a language which is commonly taught in the U.S., or is spoken in a tourist destination, or if a significant number of its speakers have immigrated here, the first place to look is your local bookstore. Tapes in many more languages are available now from "regular" publishers than was the case even a few years ago. For less commonly taught languages the Less Commonly Taught Languages Project at the University of Minnesota lists several sources. Or click here for some of my suggestions..
