Teaching Statement
I am not yet a professional teacher so my philosophy is mostly based upon my experience studying languages and my
limited experience teaching and tutoring.  An enthusiastic teacher who loves the subject and sincerely wants the students
to succeed is essential.  A teacher who relies solely on lecture and doesn’t involve the students will frustrate the students
and likely also become frustrated.  A high level of energy is necessary to maintain interest.  Each student is an individual
with different learning styles, personalities and needs.  The teacher needs to tailor the class to benefit each student.
Students should be encouraged to help one another and get lots of time practicing what they have learned.  Review is
essential in learning a language.  From day one I believe that students should be speaking the language and using what
they have learned from that day onward.  Praise and encouragement should be given frequently.  If the students are
becoming frustrated move on to something where they may be more likely to experience success.  Don’t let an atmosphere
of discouragement take hold or linger in the classroom.  Make the class one where the students feel good about being in
and leave feeling good about themselves and their abilities.  Making eye contact, smiling, and getting students to work with
each other goes a long way in creating a positive learning environment.
