Teaching
Statement
My
teaching philosophy is to make learning Chinese as practical as
possible. Class interaction is one of my approaches.
I like to ask
questions. Through the answers to my questions, I can be
aware of what
and how my students think and
understand. At the same
time, listening and
speaking skills can be improved.
When
teaching new words and concepts, I like to give students
examples on
how to use the words and phrases related to
daily living
experience. The
more they can relate to, the more they will be interested to
learn and
speak.
In
addition to the textbook, I like to tell stories, such as
Chinese
proverbs, fables, or real life inspiring stories. After
each
lesson, I
will pick one story as a supplement to share with the class.
Through
listening stories, students can enjoy the
Chinese culture and
language
altogether.
Since
we are in non-native Chinese speaking environments, the
opportunities to speak Chinese are scarce. Dialogue
practice
is also
emphasized. Usually, I use pattern for students to
practice. Pattern
practice not only increases the chances to repeat
the sentence,
but also
makes the sentence longer in conversation. For example...
Because
simplified Chinese characters are getting popular and dominant,
I
will select vocabularies from each lesson which also
have
simplified
Chinese characters to let students practice writing. I want them
to be
familiar with each form of Chinese characters.
In
conclusion, my goal is to inspire and motivate students to enjoy
learning Chinese language and culture in daily living
environment. |
