Teaching Statement
I believe that teaching a subject like Chinese must be integrated with cultural and community
contexts. I, like many teachers, believe that learning happens best when students are enjoying
the lesson. I also think that I am a better teacher when I enjoy the work that I am doing. I do
find myself enjoying singing with my students. When teaching Chinese, I incorporate brief
discussions of cultural issues. By bridging class activities with cultural events, I believe
that the language learning takes on greater meaning for students and helps them
retain the language.
