Teaching Statement
Chinese is one of the more difficult of the major world languages for speakers of English.
At the same time, Chinese is not some esoteric branch of learning that is accessible only
to those with special skills. With sufficient help and a willingness to put forth some effort,
I believe that U.S. students can learn Chinese. I also believe that students need to be
challenged and feel a sense of achievement. Frequent and immediate feedback is
important. According to my experience, U.S. students expect more encouragement
than criticism, and more verbal recognition and praise than Chinese students.
