World Languages and Cultures Festival at IUB-
Indiana University
in
Bloomington is recognized across the world as a major center for foreign
language and culture study. To further enhance our distinguished
reputation,
CeLTIE, in collaboration with the Office of Student Recruiting,
Pre-college and
Undergraduate Programs, propose to organize a World Language Festival at
IUB
to promote foreign language and international education on campus and
around
the State. We will model this event on the well-established and
successful annual
Physics Open House. As an outreach effort, the festival invites IUB
students,
high/middle school students, teachers, administrators, parents and the
general
public from all over the state to personally explore different languages
and cultures,
and learn the opportunities available for language and overseas study at
IUB. We
plan to use the festival as a means for participating language programs
(especially
those of the Less Commonly Taught Languages) to promote themselves and
consequently increase their language course enrollment. We plan to
organize the
annual event during the weekend after the spring break in 2007. This
will allow us
to maximize the recruiting potential of the program as we expect it will
interest and
attract many prospective students and their families, as they plan
spring visits to
the IU campus.
We are in the
planning stages for the first World Languages and Cultures Festival
and are hoping for participation from all relevant departments. We hope
you or a
representative from your language program can attend a planning session.
Please plan to send one of the following and sign
up RSVP to Lisa McCune at
lblackwe@indiana.edu:
-
Your
department’s language instruction coordinator/director
-
Your
department’s outreach coordinator
-
Your
department’s undergraduate academic advisor
-
Your department
chair, DGS or DUS.
